T is for Three Cliffs Bay, Gower Peninsula, Wales

A lovely seaside camping weekend with views to die for, glorious beaches and interesting walks.

We loved: The well-run, perfectly sited campsite overlooking the beautiful and ever-changing Three Cliffs Bay. The mounted policeman!

Downsides: It is a schlep from campsite (or parked car) to the bay — uphill on the way back. 

 

Every third weekend in June our children’s school plans Inset days on the Friday and Monday, which gives us the rare joy of a long weekend.  Mostly we use this to go camping, often in Wales, and this year we opted for the relatively posh Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park over the usual Hillend camping at Llangennith.  This proved a good choice. We were lucky to get two cliff top beaches with the most incredible views across the gorgeous, award-winning Three Cliffs Bay.

 

Our three days were pretty much all the same, though with varying degrees of beach time / walking  and tidal activity.

With its occasional glimpses of the sea and woodland feel, the walk down through the woods to the beach from the campsite is magical in itself, though quite a long uphill schlep at the end of busy days.

We played with the dog, made a maze of maze tag, and generally explored the river / beach .. and, of course, ran down the sand dunes!

Day 2 we were a little more adventurous and tackled the circular walk that takes you round the back of the beach, along and across the river, over the headland and down the dunes (again, running like idiots) back onto the beach.

I definitely recommend doing this walk — it’s a proper family-friendly adventure, with so much variety in such a short space of time.

Day 3 was pretty lazy (we were in the soporific swing of things by then) and involved a fair amount of beach art, more running down the dunes, some beach cricket and a trip to the sea which had retreated impossibly far.
